CAFE
This year your child will be participating in Reading and Language Arts sessions based on the acronym CAFÉ; Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. This system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one conferring.
During the Daily CAFÉ time, students will be responsible for completing up to 5 daily tasks; read to self, word work, listen to reading, and be an author. Below, is a detailed explanation of each of the CAFÉ components and how you can help at home.
Comprehension
I understand what I read!
Comprehension, understanding and interpreting what is read, is the ultimate goal of reading.
At home, have your child retell the story to you after reading. Encourage them to include the main characters, setting, problem, solution, and/or important events in the story.
Accuracy
I can read the words!
Over the years, phonics has been referred to as decoding, lifting the words off the page, word recognition, accuracy, etc. Regardless of the label, the ability to decode is a critical component in becoming a fluent reader.
Fluency
I can read smoothly with few errors, and understand what I read!
Sight words are generally considered to be those words that students need to learn by sight because they don't follow regular decoding rules. Reading sight words and high frequency words with ease is one of the top strategies for fluency.
Expand Vocabulary
I notice, learn, and use new words!
Children need to learn and practice the strategy of paying attention to words that are interesting or unique and then using prior knowledge and context to figure out the meaning of the word.
